Bandcamp Friday with Prima Records

Creating a label page and artist accounts on bandcamp

This week we’ve been working with Prima Records to get their back catalogue onto Bandcamp in time for this months ‘Bandcamp Friday’.

The Bandcamp Friday campaign began on March 20, 2020, when Bandcamp waived their revenue share in order to help artists and labels impacted by the pandemic.

Over $4.3 million was spent on music and merch, 15x the amount of a normal Friday on the site that day, helping artists cover rents, mortgages, groceries and so on. This took place again on May 1st, June 5th and today, July 3rd, is another #bandcampfriday. The success of these events have been good for artists and Bandcamp alike with increased visibility for the brand and articles about the event and the website appearing in the press.

Being a long time user of Bandcamp and having ‘taken part’ as a fan in previous Bandcamp Fridays it was interesting to see behind the scenes and to work on creating accounts, uploading music and working with the Bandcamp interface to design and customise several different pages.

Prima Records - Bandcamp

Prima Records is primarily, but not exclusively, an outlet for Sid Griffin projects be it his bluegrass band The Coal Porters, solo releases or reissues of some of The Long Ryders early albums.

This means we’ve been creating new Bandcamp pages for The Long Ryders, Sid Griffin, The Coal Porters and Western Electric.

Ease of use for both artists and fans and customers seems to be a big part of why Bandcamp has continued to grow. We’ve added twelve albums by four separate artists adding audio for the downloads along with associated CDs and merchandise and it has only taken a few of days to set it up.

There were precious few expletives muttered whilst working out how everything all worked on Bandcamp and very little in the way of bugs or problems encountered. Each band now has its own customised layout and pages and the main Prima Records page works as a hub linking to all releases.

The pages all launched at 8am this morning so we are watching with interest how they are received and how the word spreads. We are also looking forward to revisiting some of the other archive releases on Prima Records as we add more of them to Bandcamp in the coming weeks.
